Frequently Asked Questions

I am 14 ½. Can I start the process to receive my Driver’s Permit?
Yes! Colorado law allows you to take the classroom portion of your education beginning at 14 ½. You will need to take 30 hours of classroom education (see our package #1) and may begin right away. You must be within 30 days of your 15th birthday to take the final test. The test usually takes about 15 minutes and can be taken at Boulder Driving Academy. Upon passing the test you will receive 2 documents, an affidavit of completion and a certificate showing you passed the test. You then take these two documents to the Department of Motor Vehicles and they will issue you a Colorado Driver’s Permit.
What kind of Identification will I need to receive my Driver’s Permit?
You will need a State-issued birth certificate or your passport and your Social Security Number. You will also need to have your parent(s)/legal guardian(s) go with you to register as your supervised riders. They will be the ones who sign your driving log.
What is a driving log?
Students who receive their permit between the ages of 15 and 18 must maintain a driving log. During the year you hold your permit, you must record at least 50 hours of driving time, 10 hours of which must be designated as night-time driving.
I am 15, what must I do to receive my Colorado Driver’s Permit?
See above.
Now that I have my permit what must I do to receive my Colorado Driver’s License?
If you receive your permit between the ages of 15 and 16, you must also obtain 6 hours of driver’s instruction from a certified school. If you are 16 or older, we highly recommend that you take 6 hours of driver’s training to learn safe driving skills from a third-party instructor (not your mom or dad!). See our package #2 for details.
I am 15 ½, do I need the driving instruction to receive my license?
By law, you must have 6 hours of professional instruction. In addition, you should check with your insurance company to see if there are discounts available for taking this course.
I am 16 and do not have my permit. What do I need to do to obtain my license?
First you must obtain your permit. You may go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and take the written test. While you do not have to have any classroom time, we highly recommend that you take our 30-hour class to prepare you for the DMV test (see our package #1). In addition, you should check with your insurance company to see if any discount is available for taking the class. You will still need to hold your permit for 1 year as well as maintain a driving log.
I am 18 and have not yet obtained my driving permit. What do I need to do?
There are no restrictions for you to obtain your permit and license. You may take the written test by going to the Department of Motor Vehicles and take the test there. You may take the driving test there as well, as soon as you feel ready. We highly recommend that you take our 30-hour class and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training (see our
package #1 and our our package #2) to prepare you for the DMV tests.
I am 42 years old and have never driven in my life. What do I need to do to receive my Driver's License?

First you must go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and take the written test. You may then take the driving test once you feel ready. We offer individual lessons. We highly recommend that you take behind the wheel driving lessons to prepare you for the DMV test. Our behind-the-wheel classes are 2 hours in length. You will receive professional one-on-one instruction with our instructors, using our cars. See package #2 for details. You may take as many or as few lessons as you feel you need.
